Carl
Sommer
Carl Sommer is the owner and president of Reliable EDM
Corporation in Houston, Texas, the largest wire EDM job shop west of the
Mississippi (www.reliableedm.com/).
He is uniquely qualified to write a book on non-traditional machining.
His introduction to the machine tool trade goes back to
1949, at a New York City machine shop.
Sommer gained broad, valuable experience in virtually all areas of the
field-fixtures, short run production, precision tools and dies, and inspection.
He has worked as a foreman, a tool designer, and as an operations manager
for a large tool and die and stamping shop.
In 1986, Sommer began Reliable EDM with his two sons.
With the capable leadership of his sons, within nine years, Reliable EDM
became the largest wire EDM job
shop west of the Mississippi.
Sommer with his son Steve, a mechanical engineer, wrote the highly acclaimed
book, Wire EDM Handbook. It is
available through various organizations and magazines, and it is being used as a
textbook in trade schools and colleges.
His professional and industry experience has led him to
serve on the Texas State Board of Education Review Committee for Essential
Knowledge and Skills in the field of Career and Technology Education.
He has also taught a Junior Achievement economics course at Prague
University, Czech Republic.
For most of the 1970s, Sommer taught as a New York City
high school teacher. During this
time, he did extensive research seeking for solutions in America's schools.
He wrote the book, Schools in Crisis:
Training for Success or Failure?
Sommer has also written books for adult education which include a twelve-part
mathematics' series and a phonics literature-based literacy program.
Sommer hopes that after doing extensive research for this
book that it will keep America's industry competitive through knowledge of
emerging new technologies.
